Disappointed by CandyNashville duo Gabe Ruschival and Jeremy Lutito return with new albumCD album review of Disappointed by Candy's latest album release on Gray Matters label
DISAPPOINTED BY CANDY The second album release from the Nashville based, classically trained Gabe Ruschival and Jeremy Lutito, is a sublime effort. Encompassing cool retro pop, ambient dance, Chili Pepper style riffs, and even lazy Parisian evenings sitting outside a café on the track "Bottle." Odd, given that they spend most of their time in the aforementioned Mecca of all things country and western. The infectious melodies, drooling beats, chiming guitars and slick pianos, will no doubt become prime remix material for the likes of The Freemasons et al. And if that were so, would only serve to bring their music to a wider audience, more than anything. Similarities to Manchester legends, Doves, on "Not Lived Out," a hint of Duran Duran in "End Of The World" and "Sun drenched," with echoes of Coldplay in the hauntingly beautiful, jazz tinged melody of "Lullaby." It seems that here, every word has been lingered over, every beat considered, discussed. And that does not take away from its spark, making it seem mechanical and contrived, but only adds to its intensity as a stand-on its-own piece of music. This is a wholly original work-of-pop after all is said and done, and should not be belittled in any way by its mild references to the past. It's easy to be influenced by various sounds, sights, melodies and form; It’s all part of life, isn’t it? Where would music be now if people weren’t influenced by forgoing bands and artists? By its very nature, it is a concept that drives music ever onwards into the 21st century, creating. Make no mistake, this is no re-hashed reinvention of days gone by. Nor is it lacking in originality. This is now and this is happening. Here is a well observed, almost classical piece of quality sub-pop music production, that deserves your immediate attention. The world is a better place for having DBC in it. Roll on Candy, you certainly did not disappoint.
