Pictures and Sound Releases Debut AlbumOut of Portland Oregon comes a New Indie Soul SoundA review of the debut album from Portland's own Picture and Sounds. The soulful coffee house rock is made to set the mood.
It could be argued that Pictures and Sound was named after the music the band creates. The deep and personal lyrics on top of the smooth, jazzy, rock tone sends clear images to the listeners mind. The music's tone is what the Pictures and Sound has going for them, not forgetting frontman Luke Reynolds. Pictures and Sound Lyrics and StyleThe positive and upbeat lyrics are sung with a nice soft tone that says "listen to me I'm saying something." Reynolds was once frontman for Blue Merle an once popular indie rock band out of Nashville, Tennesse. Blue Merle disbanded in 2006 leaving Reynolds to meet with drummer Pete McNeal and Bassist Dave Wilder to form Pictures and Sound. The band then met with producer Jacquire King to make their debut self titled album. Relased on August 19, 2008 the indie rock band sounds like it could have longevity in their music career but may not hold on to fans. Though their music is easy on the ears it is far from marketable and far from attention grabbing. In short they may need to produce something more lively to hold mainstream listeners attentions. Luke Reynolds has a melodic voice and tone, but at times his voice can be mistaken for a lulaby. Pictures and Sounds SinglesThe first single taken from the album, Its You, is a love song that glorifies the woman and the way she would interact with a man. The catchy and connecting hook says "Its you I love and not the thought of you,", in itself this says a lot. As in all art forms it is left up to those witnessing the experience to interpret what Pictures and Sound is trying to say or convey. The other singles they have released are 100 Directions and The Youth. The two records are very different from Its You, as well as being very different from each other. The band has certainly shown range in what they do. 100 Directions speaks of the reality of making everyday decisions and what every decision means. Reynolds really digs into the hook and gives an average song an inkling of soul and rock: "I thought of this in a hundred different directions, but none of them are right, none of them are right" -100 Directions. The Youth is a song about the future and what might happen if those who are too busy to notice that the youth are slowly dwindling away, might lose them. Then, Pictures and Sound change the melody to a uptempo beat that screams of encouragement. "Soon, we will rise up like a tidal wave x3." The album is out priced $12.00, and would be money well spent. It seems that with this release, Pictures and Sound is here to stay.
